February 2011
Chester Square was Highly Commended in the London Gardens Society 2010 competition, up from a Commended in 2009. To build on this success, a lot is planned for 2011.
An array of Tulip bulbs have been planted so look forward to Chester Square's traditional vibrant spring display. In addition to Tulips, Allium 'Purple Sensation', will be gracing the new borders and Anenome Blanda will add additional colour to the east garden.
Sadly the Viburnum Beetle devastated quite a few shrubs last spring, especially in the east garden. Their removal has opened up some border space which has presented the opportunity to introduce more colour contrast and seasonal interest. Initially, Philadelphus 'Yellow Hill' and Cercis Canadensis 'Forest Pansy', have been planted for foliage contrast to the mid green which currently dominates the dog garden. Hebe and Hibiscus have been planted to provide some much needed later summer flowers. This is an ongoing programme for improvement so expect to see further developments. The north east border is currently at the drawing board stage.
Further enhancement of the outer borders along Eccleston Street is planned to improve the experience of walking between the gardens. The pinks and purples of Cistus, Hebe, Penstemon and Comos which were planted last year on the north corner will extend along the sides of both gardens, And finally, the border to the east of the rose garden is earmarked for a revamp. Overgrown shrubs will be removed to re-establish symmetry to the bed and make space for an early summer Foxglove display.
